Habitat builds homes in over 100 countries around the world. Ever thought about helping hurricane Katina victims? We have Habitat teams from around the world pouring into New Orleans. Or how about Central America? Awfully nice when it's 40 below here and the palm trees are waving their welcome to you in the warm tropical sun.
Or, how about Tajikistan as they rebuild their tiny country after their civil war? (Don't worry, we will not send you where it is not safe).
Getting started
Teams are usually made up of 10 to 15 people with one or two team leaders.
Team leaders may be required to attend the GV training workshop. Previous international travel and leadership
experience is preferred.
The trip must include a minimum of five days working on the build site.
For trips to Latin America it is very helpful to have Spanish speakers (or you will be provided with a translator and
the team will pay for their meals and lodging).
Your Canadian GV coordinators will guide you through all the preparations, provide registration and orientation
materials as well as act as a liaison with the host country.
You will correspond with the host country GV staff by email to get detailed information about the country’s culture
and climate, trip logistics and much more.
If there are participants under the age of 18, who are not accompanied by parent/guardian, we require a sending
organization to sign a Memorandum of Agreement indicating legal responsibility for the minors.
The Costs
Donation to Habitat $650/person
In-country lodging, meals and transportation $45-70/person/day (approx)
Travel Medical insurance $4/person/day
A portion of the volunteer leader’s costs (variable)
Airfare and cancellation insurance (arranged by participant)
Translator expenses if required (arranged with host)
Charitable donation tax receipts can be issued by HFH Canada for each of the costs listed above.
International travel
The team is responsible for arranging and paying for their airfare.
Each team member will need a passport which is valid for at least 6 months after the return date. Some countries also
require an entry visa.
Some immunizations may be required or recommended. Please visit a travel health clinic.
We will provide safety guidelines and procedures.
Fundraising
Fundraising is a great way to involve more people in your project and share your excitement about helping a family to
build a home and a better life for themselves and their children.
The awareness you create may eventually result in more homes for more families.
We can help with creative ideas and resources.
We will guide you through the process of receiving, recording and submitting the donations.
The House Construction
Habitat homes in tropical countries are often made of concrete block or brick. The team will work with the homeowners
and trained masons. The work may include digging, mixing concrete and laying bricks.
Recreational Activities
Teams often plan some local sightseeing on their rest days and may decide to plan for some extra recreational activities
after the build. The costs of these are not included in the costs listed above.
